We have noticed an increase in individuals falsely claiming to be associated with the program. Scammers are pretending to be representatives from GEFA or a member of this program’s contractor network, sending unsolicited text messages, emails, and phone calls.

Potential scams include attempts to get you to share sensitive personal information over the phone (call or text) or asking to run a credit check for participation in Georgia’s Home Energy Rebates. This is a scam; credit checks are not required for our program.

Georgia’s Home Energy Rebates is a contractor-led energy efficiency program. With the exception of the Do-It-Yourself pathway, rebates are only available when you work with a program-approved contractor. The current list of participating contractors is available online here. GEFA recommends that you make the initial outreach to a program-approved contractor using the contact information listed for that company on our program's approved contractor directory.

Here’s how you can protect yourself from a scammer:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited calls and texts

If you receive an unsolicited phone call without prior notification from our team or outreach from a program-approved contractor, it is likely scam.

  • Do not share personal information in response to unsolicited outreach

Do not provide personal information such as your bank information (e.g., account number, routing number) or social security number – this information is not required to participate in our program.

  • Confirm the contractor is program-approved

Make sure the contractor you are working with is approved by Georgia's Home Energy Rebates.  If the contractor you are working with is not listed on the program website, please call our Contact Center to confirm their participation. Do not allow a contractor start work before you have confirmed they are program-approved.

  • Report a scam

If an interaction feels suspicious, hang up and contact us at 877-348-5237 to report the possible scam. You can also use the online form to notify program team of a scam or possible scam.
